SVT-Training with Strobe Glasses
Training with Strobe glasses is actually very effective when facilitated by a practitioner who is trained and educated.
Here is my guide for you on the why and the how. Enjoy!
Vision Science
I’ll make it simple-The brain connects to the eyes, and the eyes to the brain. The eyes actually have a little cross over and connect to opposite sides of your brain.
The muscles that control the eyes are innervated by the brainstem.
The eyes connect to centers in the brain responsible for attention, thinking, planning, emotion, speech, spatial object recognition, depth perception, memory encoding and storing information.
So yes you have heard me say it before and will hear it again-the eyes are a window into cognition!
How is SVT Effective?
Removing vision through SVT is a performance tool that can enhance physical and cognitive performance. Removing vision forces the nervous system to fill the gaps with other senses. Motor, anticipation techniques (“seeing” the game mentally, aka visualization), and even hearing or kinematic clues. Some effects of SVT happen post-training. The visual system becomes faster at processing visual information.
Here is my rough real-life analogy: If you know how to make a cup of coffee in 10 minutes, but suddenly only had 5 minutes to do it, you would figure out pretty quickly how to do it most efficiently. Then, when you are given the 10 minutes back, the skills transfer and suddenly you are much better at making a coffee in 10 minutes then you were before.
You also improve:
Sensory-motor reweighting
Motor skill adaptation
Agility (COD)
Eye-hand coordination
Use and assignment of covert (internal) and ouvert (external) attention
- Overt attention is where you shift your gaze for example, while Ouvert attention is where your mental attention sits when your gaze is in one spot.
What does the research say on SVT? What is the MOA?
” SVT may modulate brain activity patterns, enhance perceptual–motor integration, and strengthen attentional control networks. The mechanisms underlying stroboscopic training are primarily associated with adaptations in visual information processing and motor control. SVT imposes a “visual bottleneck” by restricting continuous visual input, compelling athletes to perform movements under conditions of intermittent visual occlusion. This constraint encourages more efficient utilization of limited visual cues and fosters reliance on anticipatory strategies to complete motor tasks51. When normal visual conditions are restored, these adaptations may result in an “overcompensation” effect, manifesting as enhanced performance”

Reviews: Sports Performance and Strobe Glasses
I have spent many evenings this summer reviewing the current information on strobe glasses and training in high performance settings with various athletes. So, I will relay the information that is most important:
- “SVT primarily enhances the cognitive components of visual–motor coordination” [Gultekinler et al., 2025]
- “When designing SVT protocols, it is essential to recognize that training duration and frequency may differentially influence various aspects of athletic performance…
- For speed-related outcomes such as reaction time, a study found that even short-term, low-frequency SVT can produce meaningful improvements.
- However, extending the training duration does not appear to yield linear benefits, and overly frequent sessions may reduce effectiveness due to accumulated fatigue.
- For instance, during the preparatory phase of a season, high-frequency SVT may be used over several weeks to improve ball-handling precision.
- Conversely, during the pre-competition phase, a moderate training frequency may be more appropriate to maintain and consolidate reaction responsiveness without inducing fatigue”
- Luo et al., 2025
- For instance, during the preparatory phase of a season, high-frequency SVT may be used over several weeks to improve ball-handling precision.
- Adolescent athletes experienced greater benefits from stroboscopic training compared to their adult counterparts….”Adolescents are in a critical phase of neural development and skill acquisition, during which visual training is more likely to produce measurable improvements in performance; For novice athletes, SVT may accelerate the development of perceptual–decision-making skills” (Luo et al., 2025)
- SVT Training helps both cognitive and visual performance: “Integrating stroboscopic eyewear with target-tracking tasks or cognitive decision-making exercises may facilitate improvements across multiple perceptual–motor domains, thereby enhancing training efficacy through synergistic effects.” (Luo et al., 2025)
- Reaction time and Accuracy can be trained with SVT: “SVT produced significant moderate effects on both time-based outcomes (SMD = −0.59, p < 0.01) and accuracy-based outcomes (SMD = 0.73, p < 0.01)” (Luo et al., 2025)
OK SO- Finally the good part. How to apply SVT:
The following structure is shown to be effective:
- 6-10 weeks training
- 2 sessions per week
- Each lasting minimum 10 minutes
- Strobe freq, 5-10 Hz.
- Time-based tasks: 50-70% optimal duty cycle
- Accuracy based tasks: 10-50% optimal duty cycle
Adolescents showed greater improvements in time-based performance
Athletes with 4-8 years of training experience demonstrated the most overall improvements.
*Note-this may have to be adapted according to individual athlete needs.
There are multiple types of drills:
- Reaction Time
- Dual Task Reaction time
- Dual Task Cognitive Overload (trains capacity for decision making with accumulated mental fatigue)
- Accuracy
- Shooting and Ball Handling
- Eye Domainance
- Sensorimotor Reweighting (de-training vision to learn an essential physical skill).
I will share more of these visually on my Instagram platform.
Please reach out with questions or if you want to learn more about how to implement this!
Also note-There are many good sport specific studies (and many bad ones). If you are interested in discussing these in a sport specific manner please reach out to me.
