Ask ten athletes what they should be eating and you’ll get ten different answers. And honestly, they might all be right. A marathoner, a powerlifter, and a gymnast cutting weight for a meet are not solving the same problem. They just happen to all be called “athletes.”
This series breaks sports nutrition down the way it actually works in practice: by goal, not by generic rulebook. This is the starting line for sport nutrition information, and from here I encourage you to take specific questions for your own needs to your registered dietician or team nutritionist, and keep the conversation going.
Over six posts, I’ll walk through the five needs that cover almost every athlete you’ll ever coach (or be). This education comes from my CEU credits, degree program nutrition courses, medical education, conversations with practitioners and current research:
- Endurance — lasting longer and delaying fatigue
- Power & strength — explosive output and faster muscle contractions
- Competition nutrition — fueling and recovering around the event itself
- Fat loss — making weight or leaning out without wrecking performance
- Muscle gain — building size and strength without wasted effort
- Female Athletes – fluctuating needs through their cycle and RED-S
Who counts as “an athlete,” anyway?
You don’t need a pro contract. The working definition here is based on training volume and exercise demand. Not whether you’re getting paid or standing on a podium:
- Recreational: roughly 4+ hours of structured training per week
- Committed / competitive: roughly 10+ hours per week
- High performance: roughly 15+ hours per week
Anyone training with real structure and volume, with or without an upcoming competition, has nutrition needs that go beyond generic “eat healthy” advice.
Why personalization matters
The theme that runs through every post in this series is that the right nutrition strategy depends entirely on what the body is being asked to do:
- An endurance athlete’s biggest enemy is glycogen depletion.
- A power athlete cares more about motor unit recruitment and rapid recovery than sheer calories.
- Someone cutting weight has to lose fat without draining glycogen (and the water that comes with it), or performance tanks.
- Someone chasing muscle gain hits a point where more protein simply stops helping.
None of these problems are solved by the same plan. That’s the whole point of building the strategy around the demand, not the other way around.
